Managed Industrial Switches provide configurable features like: VLAN, IGMP, Redundancy, mirroring, security, SNMP, and other features which allow you to control every connection to the switch.
Fiber optic links are used for longer distances and high noise areas, there is two types of fiber connections SC (square connector) and ST (round connector), fiber comes in MM Multimode (2K meter distance) and SM Single mode (15K meters distance). The most common is the ST and MM Multimode.
